


Counsel and Care’s Older People and the Media Awards 2009 |

In September Counsel and Care, the national charity working with older people, their families and carers to get the best care and support announced the winners of the 2009 Counsel and Care ‘Older people in the Media’ Awards, which searched for good examples of media coverage of older people and ageing from the radio, print media, television and the internet.
Nominations were sought for individuals and organisations that positively portrayed older people in a way that was sensitive, respectful, diverse and age neutral and I am very pleased to report that VINTAGE RADIO was awarded Runner up status under Best Radio category. BBC Radio Ulster being the winners for their Good Morning Ulster, Radio Ulster News, Talk Back. Community Safety for Older People presented to Kathleen Carragher – Head of BBC Ulster.
The Judge’s citation stated “ Vintage Radio” is a radio station run by and for older people, and it has an international dimension through the internet. Its aim is for older people to continue to play an active part in their community, at all levels, culturally and intellectually.
‘Skills for Radio” courses are run for older people who want to be actively involved in creating and presenting the broadcasts to industry standard. The older trainees work in real studios learning the essential broadcasting skills, microphone use, operating equipment, interview techniques and script writing and editing.
The Vintage Radio team is congratulated on their courage and enthusiasm in supporting and enabling older people to achieve their goals”.
The four other categories were:-
Best Print Winner was awarded to The Mature Times: Various issues, Tony Watts - Editor; Runner Up went to The Observer Magazine ‘Life Begins at 83’, Allan Jenkins - Editor.
Best Web Winner was awarded to the BBC: You and Yours Care in the UK Season website – Andrew Smith - Editor ; Runner Up went to The Guardian: Ageing Britain website.
Best TV Winner BBC One Imagine: Save the Last Dance for Me – Alan Yentob - Presenter; Runner Up went to the BBC News: a range of news items considering the implications of our ageing society, Sue Littlemore - Reporter.

Overall Winner – BBC: You and Yours Care in the UK Season website Andrew Smith - Editor.
John Cotcher, Glenda Davies and Jackie McAlavey represented VINTAGE RADIO at the Awards Ceremony.
This Award is for all the people who are involved in Vintage Radio and for their hard work and commitment . A special thank you goes to John Cotcher, from all of us in the Vintage Radio team, who had the foresight to make this happen. Without you John there would have been no Vintage Radio and you have been an inspiration to us all.
