A Techs Blog

Whilst we are broadcasting 7 days a week the small technical team are working behind the scenes. For those that might be interested I thought I start a blog of the sorts of technical problems and projects we have at Vintage Radio. I only enter stuff in this section at random, as and when the moment occurs.

Web site updates beckon

Need to see how we can get a closer integration between Facebook and Joomla plus add some Facebook like buttons to articles etc.

Need a podcast manager system  as the number of podcasts available for downloading is now too large  and I need a search  and grouping facility. Can't find one for free yet - may have to buy one.. Need to think how I migrate the web site software to the latest release 2.5 - Joomla has introduced major changes  and many of our modules don't port to the new version.

Mon 21st May

In the studio to finish labelling network sockets, configure the ethernet switch  and fit a lock on to our secure network server cabinet where we keep our routers and ethernet switches. Was interupted by other non-Vintage calls to make,

Looping audio progs

For some time now we have been having random listener reports whereby the audio stream from our web site seems to go into a loop. Its yet again one of those unrepeatable problems with a high annoyance factor.  We have been using a player called JPlayer that is coded using html5 and will fall back to Flash. The idea being that the html5 will give us compatability with some Apple products that don't support Flash. Regetably it doesn't work with all and only some Android products but works perfectly with Windows and Linux operating systems. But we get this occasional looping - it can usuially be cured by closing your browser and re-starting it. We suspect a browser player compatability issue but we have had problems with IE7,8 and 9 as well as Firefox. Not noticed it wiith any other browsers else yet although we have tried it with Chrome, Safari and Opera. So we have reverted to a Flash based player.with a option to go to another page with the Jplayer and a Windows Media player option.

Web site pages for our presenters

It seemed like a good idea but have run out of time. Studio move and personal time demands have taken their toll. Have an initial set of about 6 volunteers who want to be able to make and edit their own web pages. Have to sort out a training session when I am clear of my hols.Thats the  problem,  to save time you have to invest time.

Intermittent output

On the 17th and 18th May we experienced frequent transmission breaks during the afternoon reported by some listeners. I listened for a couple of hours non-stop on the second day about an hour after we had a report and the system was rock solid. Equipment logs all show no problems, we've recently installed some new network equipment - but thats OK. Our Service Provider assures us there have been no problems or server outages. The problem goes away - what was that all about?
