A VOLUNTARY radio station that inspires listeners across the air waves has been nominated for a Your Champions award.
Vintage Radio, based at the YMCA in Birkenhead, reaches out to 70,000 to 100,000 listeners each month around the globe. Broadcasting via the internet, it first went on air in 2009. Since then it has developed into a prime time seven-day a week voluntary service. A 30-strong team of volunteers run the station 12 hours a day. They have been nominated for the champion team category.
Member William Redfearn said:
"Many mature listeners felt their tastes were not catered for.
"After a meeting Vintage Radio was set up. We bought or hired equipment, then got the station up and running. All equipment is second or third hand nursed back to life by our tech team.
"Firstly, Help the Aged helped sponsor us. Now we are self-funded through various grants.
"We manage everything from presenting programmes to solving technical issues.
"Most of us had no broadcast ra-codeNA (jj0 experience, but had transferable skills in writing, engineering and IT. It has been a steep learning curve for us all.
"Presenters can ask questions that listeners want answered. We are unique and our programmes focus on local issues and interests."
